JANUARY 2021 WORK-IN-PROGRESS UPDATE
Hi all! Happy New Year. This is my second post of 2021 — if you missed my first, you can check it out here (it’s a poem titled “Dill Weed Dreaming”).
In this short post, I want to take the time to talk a little about the writing I’ve been working on, since things have been a bit sparse around here for a while. A few months ago, I finished about a third of a first draft of what’s shaping up to be a very long novel, working title O Beautiful. As always, the most difficult decision for me when writing is choosing what story I should write. This one happens to be the one I feel I should write at this time!
Without going into too much detail, O Beautiful explores a time in the perhaps not-so-distant future of this country. I’m aiming for a literary tone while exploring some genre tropes and very big themes. It’s an ambitious project that I’m tackling in thirds, since the finished product is going to be so long. The first third is titled Flood and introduces the novel’s three primary characters, who all live in various parts of the country and experience various things in their day-to-day lives.
Oh, and something interesting about how I’m writing this novel! I’m writing it completely by hand, which may seem like a strange decision in this digital age. Well, I figure that I started my writing journey longhand and still end up writing about half of any given draft longhand anyways, so I may as well take this on the old-fashioned way. Don’t catch me whipping out a typewriter at the end, though. That would be a little much.
If you’re a writer, I hope your writing is going well. 2020 was a tough year for me to get anything going, so I definitely relate if nothing’s doing at the moment. But if you do have something going, I’d love to hear about it in the comments! Or drop me a line about your day or anything that’s on your mind.
