I read “In the Garden” to you!

Come to me in the garden,
your eyes done up with kohl,
rimmed with smoke —
my mistake — be mine,
my love, my treasure, my
dearest friend this world
and the next.

And we will climb unsung
the ivy
and the snow-capped
mountaintops, the trellises of roses —
beware the thorns — my dear,
be mindful of the heights
as we near the peak of glory.

The poison is in the wine
and in our hearts. Not in
the cherries we discovered
along the way. Nor in
the laurels we trampled
beneath our feet. Nor yet
in the frankincense and myrrh.
